Summary:The Sterile Processing Technician is assigned duties
performing decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and
distribution of surgical instruments throughout the hospital and
clinics, utilizing infection control and safety practices during
all phases of the process.
Reports to: Sterile Processing Manager and Director of Surgery
-Responsibilities of the PositionProvides inspection,
decontamination, assembly, and sterilization of instruments and
other patient care equipment in accordance with processing
guidelines, AAMI, AORN, TJC, and OSHA requirements.Operates
departmental equipment daily according to manufacturer instructions
with emphasis on safety.Provides customer service to all
departments with a focus on the patient need.Processes and
documents all sterile supplies and equipment daily using chemical,
biological and mechanical indicators to verify sterility in
accordance with manufacturer instructions and hospital
policy.Monitors and performs antimicrobial and disinfection
solutions testing according to manufacturer instructions and
documentation daily.Operates all required equipment and machinery
accurately and safely, prepares, assembles, and sterilized
instruments and supplies according to parameters of sterilization
in accordance with The Department of Health, TJC, OSHA, CDC, AAMI
and AORN standards Maintains appropriate records, and monitors
quality control and infection control standards.Accurately handles
and cares for instruments appropriately, including appropriate
selection of cleaning agent's lubricants, examination for function,
identification and assemble according to OneSource and preparation
for sterilization.Correctly peel-packs supplies/instruments, wrap
instruments for sterilization, inspect each instrument for use,
function, completeness, and cleanliness.Inventories, restocks, and
check the Thoracostomy cart for out-of-date items.Is responsible
for reporting damaged or malfunctioning equipment to Manager and
Material Manager to follow process for replacement.Maintains
records for QA on efficacy testing on sterilization equipment and
washers.Properly transports and handling contaminated instruments
and equipment from hospital floors and clinicsPerform quality
control activities, document department temperature and
humidity.Employees are expected to comply with all regulations,
including Joint Commission Standards.Adheres to work the daily
rotating on-call schedule.Regularly exposed to the risk of
bloodborne pathogens when working in the decontamination.Adheres to
Standard Precaution as appropriate, which may include: the use of
protection barriers, as appropriate (e.g., gloves, masks, gowns,
face shield, head cover and shoe covers).Promotes individual
professional growth and development by meeting requirements for
mandatory/ continuing education and skills competency; support
department base goals which contribute to the success of the
organization; Communicate with operating room (OR) staff to provide
required instruments.Maintains schedule flexibility to rotate
shifts and adjust hours as needed.Maintains a work record of
regular attendance, timely arrivals, and departures.Knows fire and
safety procedures for work area.Maintains professional appearance
appropriate to position and function. Wears identification badge
while on duty.Participates in cost effective delivery of
care.Minimum EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent is
required. -Certifications/LicensesCSPDT (CBSPD) or CRCST (IAHCSMM)
certification is required within 2 years upon hire date.Basic Life
Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association
(AHA) is required upon hire. -Required SkillsCritical thinking
skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal
supervision.Must be able to work in a stressful environment and
take appropriate action.Knowledge of equipment function sufficient
to be able to determine operational adequacy and to distinguish
between operation error and equipment malfunction.Knowledge of
applicable sanitary, infection control, and safety standards
sufficient to be able to perform all assignments within the safety
parameters.Using OneSource as a resource-knowledge sufficient to be
able to assemble and wrap appropriate instruments, supplies, and
equipment.Knowledge of processes, procedures, quality assurance,
chemicals, and medical instruments sufficient to be able to
decontaminate and sterilize equipment, supplies and
instruments.Ability to lift and move trays of instruments up to 25
lbs.Must have a good telephone manners and problem-solving
skills.Can perform bending, lifting, and washing using
decontamination processes, which will include instrument pan, bins,
trays, and carts of various size.Skill in cleaning specialized
